The Hevreh Beit Midrash: Reading Beyond The Headlines

A beit midrash (“house of study") is where Jews have always gathered around texts to ask hard questions and argue with each other honestly, in the hope that the learning changes how we live. This fall, Hevreh is launching an ongoing beit midrash built around that kind of sustained, serious Jewish learning.

Our first season, Reading Beyond the Headlines: Israeli & Palestinian Voices in Conversation, is an attempt at a different kind of conversation about Israel and Palestine: one that begins with books rather than opinions. This conversation will center, and be guided by the voices of people whose lives have been shaped by the region.

Over four sessions, participants will read memoir, history, and collaborative writing by Israeli Jewish and Palestinian authors. The goal is not to arrive at a single…
