About the Event
In the secular and the Jewish world, social justice has been a much-discussed topic. In the political arena, in everyday life, and within the religious communities, the desire for more social justice has been paramount.
With the publication of this timely book, by the CCAR Press, contemporary scholars, communal leaders, rabbis, and laypersons have described how social justice was a prominent theme in the Bible, and nowhere clearer than in the Torah—the five books of Moses. What these contemporary contributors have done is bring a “social justice lens” to each weekly parashah. The commentators have shed new light on the Torah and have shown how the text still resonates today and “motivates us to seek justice.”
While we can not examine collectively all 52 portions, each week in this lunch n' learn series, we will explore a particular parashah from one of the five books of Torah.
There is a debate in the Jewish tradition about which is greater--study or action. In our study together, we will both perform and prompt the practice of Tikkun Olam.
The Social Justice Torah Commentary can be purchased in advance from the CCAR Press. Print outs will also be provided for each conversation.
All are welcome. No prior experience is necessary. Virtual access is available. Please contact info@hevreh.org to receive the Zoom call-in information.
