Jewish Caroling: The Music of Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager and Carolyn Leigh

When most people hear the term “Jewish Caroling,” their first thoughts turn to the many Christmas carols written by Jews. Hevreh’s Rabbi Emerita Deborah Zecher’s Jewish Caroling cabaret has a very different focus; this show celebrates the work of Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager, and Carolyn Leigh.

When most people hear the term “Jewish Caroling,” their first thoughts turn to the many Christmas carols written by Jews. Hevreh’s Rabbi Emerita Deborah Zecher’s Jewish Caroling cabaret has a very different focus; this show celebrates the work of Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager, and Carolyn Leigh, extraordinary songwriters who are all Jewish women, sharing (more or less) the same first name. Carole King's Tapestry celebrated the 50th anniversary of its release in 2021 and the songs are as beloved today as they were five decades ago. Carole Bayer Sager is renowned for having collaborated with just about everyone in show business and with her witty and intelligent lyrics, Carolyn Leigh has given us some great American standards like When In Rome and Young At Heart. Rabbi Zecher weaves together the songs and lives of these iconic songwriters in a show that broadwayworld.com called “divine.”

Jewish Caroling had its debut at the famed Don’t Tell Mama in New York City in December 2021 and Rabbi Zecher was nominated for a MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) Award in the category of Best Female Vocalist for this show.

Years ago, she enrolled in an adult cabaret class at the Berkshire Music School and her love for the world of cabaret was born. She was the creator and one of the performers of Broadway Bible, a show which connected familiar Bible stories with beloved show tunes. Her first NYC cabaret show, ON PURPOSE, a musical memoir, was nominated for a MAC Award and broadwayworld.com award for best debut. She is also a member of Four Women, Four Stories, a Broadway World-nominated show featuring the songs of Jewish composers and the life stories of the four Jewish women who comprise the cast.

She has created and performed a number of Jewish-themed cabaret shows for Hevreh and other Jewish communities around the country; she was also the creator and one of the performers in Warm Up the Winter, an annual concert that has raised over $100,000 for fuel assistance for the Southern Berkshire community since its inception in 2009.

Pianist/Arranger/Conductor/Singer-Songwriter Tracy Stark is an 11-time MAC Award winner in the categories of Music Director, Piano Bar Entertainer and Song of the Year. She has worked with such performers as Lesley Gore, Tovah Feldshuh, Marni Nixon, Tonya Pinkins and hundreds of other rock, jazz, Broadway and cabaret vocalists. She has conducted and played at venues all over the country including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. She has three CD’s of original music.
